Anthropomorphic jug

Possibly Pergamon, Asia Minor, late 1st century BCE – early 1st century CE

Site: Panticapaeum (Kerch)

Terracotta-coloured ceramic clay. Anthropomorphic jug in the form of an African head assembled from several moulds. Issuing from the crown of the head is a narrow neck with a flaring lip; a fluted handle is affixed to the jug just below the lip and at the back of the head. The flatly cut neck forms the base of the jug. Covered overall with orange-red glossy lustre.
